Research at WIS

For more than 175 years UW–Madison remained one of the few remaining institutions in the USA that continued to support a free-standing Department of Botany offering BS, MS, & PhD degrees in Botany. In 2026 Botany became part of the Department of Biology, which is home to a sizeable number of faculty, students, academic staff, and associates who conduct research in the area of plant systematics (broadly defined) and/or ecology. These are the primary, although not exclusive, users of WIS.

Among the pages presented here are online keys, identification tools, lists of publications, and specialized project webpages that showcase the ongoing research productivity of the Wisconsin State Herbarium.
