With support from the National Science Foundation’s Polar Research Cluster, WIS partnered with the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Herbarium to database & digitize specimens of the world’s Arctic and Subarctic lichens, as well as to develop online keys, maps, and species descriptions. 
The two year effort, entitled “Toward Documenting Biodiversity Change in Arctic Lichens: Databasing Principal Collections, Establishing a Baseline, & Developing a Virtual Flora” resulted in a dedicated Symbiota web portal [now retired] searchable through the Consortium of North American Lichen Herbaria.
